Looking back, I didn't get into debt overnight.
And I definitely didn't get out of it quickly either.
But there were a few mistakes that made everything worse.
And if I had caught them earlier, I probably would've saved a lot of time and stress.
Mistake #1 — Waiting too long
I kept telling myself:
"I'll deal with it soon."
But "soon" kept getting pushed back.
And while I waited, interest kept building.
Mistake #2 — Trusting minimum payments
I thought I was doing the responsible thing.
Paying every month, staying current.
But I didn't realize how little that was actually helping.
It felt like progress…
But it wasn't.
Pay → feel responsible → barely reduce balance → repeat.
Mistake #3 — Avoiding information
I didn't want to look too deep into my situation.
Part of me already knew it wasn't good.
So I avoided it.
But that just kept me stuck longer.
What I learned
None of these mistakes felt big at the time.
That's the problem.
They feel small… until they compound.
Small delays snowball into years of extra payments
Minimums keep you current but not progressing
Avoidance makes every problem compound
What I would do differently
If I had to restart:
I'd look at my situation earlier
I'd understand how payments actually work
And I'd explore real options sooner
That's what finally helped me shift things.
